Kim Hyeonhee: Weight of the Soul

Nov1 - Nov 22, 2024

H-flux Gallery is delighted to present Weight of the Soul, a solo exhibition by Kim Hyeonhee, running from November 1 to November 22, 2024. Kim Hyeonhee is known for transforming discarded everyday objects into plaster casts, creating compelling reliefs and three-dimensional human forms. This exhibition showcases about 20 new works that use chicken wire’s fragile texture and the shaping of plaster casts to symbolize human vulnerability and loneliness, while conveying the weight of existence within incomplete forms. Art critic Choi Kwangjin offers a profound interpretation of Kim's work, stating: “Her art is an experience of deep existential solitude, where she projects herself onto discarded beings that can fall no further, yet from that very depth, seeds of hope begin to grow.” He highlights Kim’s use of wire, mechanical parts, and plastic containers—materials abandoned by society—as symbolic mediums that convey human alienation and internal conflict. Choi emphasizes how her work visually presents existential dilemmas, raising philosophical questions about the tension between inner struggle and freedom. In her artist statement, Kim Hyeonhee reflects, “I want to find essential value in what is small, dirty, and insignificant.” Through this process, she uncovers both melancholy and reason for hope within objects that have been overlooked or cast aside. This exhibition invites viewers to confront human loneliness and inner conflict, while simultaneously revealing the potential for new beginnings and growth. Kim Hyeonhee’s works resonate deeply, showing how even discarded objects possess an enduring vitality and the power of rebirth, offering a transformative experience for all who visit.
