Hyunsoo Kim
Hyunsoo Kim (b.1975, Korea) is a multimedia artist focused on using art as a catalyst for personal and societal change—a space that can harness the transformative power of play, create harmony with nature, and joyfully celebrate life's inherent complexities.
Kim's artistic journey is deeply rooted in her intimate experiences of nature's profound impact on human existence. Recalling a pivotal moment among sycamore trees swaying gently in the night breeze, Kim shares how she felt an intimate connection with the natural world as if her essence resonated with its very being. This experience opened her to a profound sense of liberation, transcending the boundaries imposed by society and allowing her to explore the depths of her inner self. Since then, she has embarked on a profound journey of exploration, seeking harmony, freedom, and interconnectedness. Inspired by her deep bond with nature, Kim endeavors to capture elusive human desires through art, aiming to revive primal instincts and evoke raw emotions through Neo-Expressionism.
In her creative process, Kim embraces an innocent world of play, where conventional perceptions fade and objects freely transform under her imaginative gaze. Her artwork, influenced by the aesthetic sentiments of folk tales and traditional art (known as 'Minhwa'), playfully juxtaposes human figures with nature and whimsical elements.
Kim has held numerous solo and group exhibitions, including "Dangerous Play-Homoludens" at Placemak (Seoul), "Playing on the Border" at the Kum-Ho Museum (Seoul), and "Dangerous Play" at K.O.N.G Gallery (Seoul). She was shortlisted for the Sovereign Asian Art Prize 2024 and featured in the Sovereign Asian Art Prize Finalists Exhibition at H Queen’s in Hong Kong in May 2024.
