Alex Griffin
Alex Griffin (b. 1978, currently residing in East Falls, Philadelphia) is an American painter whose works inspire recollections of the past and conjure ethereal realms. The mystical atmosphere of his work is reinforced by his technique of layering paint and the process of scraping, erasing, and etching, which creates a dialogue between the past and the present as the scraped-back oil paint and wax reveal themselves and mix with the new imagery. His use of blurred figures within ambiguous landscapes is the vehicle that transports viewers to otherworldly places, residing in a realm of in-between states.
Griffin received his B.F.A. in Painting and Printmaking at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2008. His artwork has been showcased in both solo and group exhibitions across the United States, including at the Woodmere Art Museum in Philadelphia and Nancy Margolis Gallery in N.Y. Between 2017 and 2019, he was associated with The Professional Artist Membership Program at the Mainline Art Centre. Today, Griffin’s paintings are included in private collections across the country and abroad.
